ALL THROUGH HISTORY ARTISTS HAVE USED LOVE AS A BASE FOR SOME OF THEIR GREATEST WORKS. NO MATTER WHERE YOU TALENT LIES, WHETHER THEY ARE A WRITER, A PAINTER, A FILMMAKER, A POET OR A PHOTOGRAPHER, IT IS OFTEN THE CONCEPT OF LOVE THAT DRIVES THEM TO THEIR BEST ACCOMPLISHMENTS. BEAUTIFUL LOVE STORIES OR EVEN LOVE DECEPTIONS MAKE GREAT INSPIRATION.
Damian Siqueiros was born in Tijuana in the year 1980. He started his formal artistic education at the age of 20, but didn’t get to taking photograph until the year 2002, when he won money in a school contest that allowed him to buy a digital camera. Even though he followed a small course in Spain in 2004, he considers himself pretty much self taught in the area of photography, make-up and stage design. Three elements that are well represented in his work.
Motivated by several contests he won, he already stated exhibiting his work only one year after he started shooting, and up till now he has enjoyed several expositions, both solo and in group. Having a sincere interest in fashion and publicity, Damian was give the chance to publish in Elle magazine and Vogue, making a dream come through by doing so. Having maintained a social view and perspective in his work and life, Damian has made himself also a name in raising money for AIDS infected people and at the moment he is recipient of a scholarship given by the Mexican and the French government to study in École National Superièure des Arts Decoratifs, in Paris.
About his work he says: "I’d like to think in my work not as a mere photographic achievement, but more as a documented result of a larger process of producing an image; probably it easier to understand it in a cinematographic language rather than in a photographic one." Gender issues have become a central matter through the evolution of his work. The treatment of gender topics originates from personal experience but also from intensive research. "My work does not pretend to illustrate theories about gender; it seeks to make a fair representation of what they study, what I’ve seen and also experience," Damian explains. "But above all, my work follows an ideology of social integration, where feeling become human and not a matter of gay or straight love." –B-
