INSTEAD OF CHILDREN'S BOOKS, ETHAN JAMES GREW UP ON FILM. ALL KINDS OF FILM ALTHOUGH HE CONFESSES THE BIGGER PART WAS HORROR. DUE TO THIS EXPOSURE HE ENDED UP BEING A SCREENWRITER WHO ENDED UP WRITING MORE POETRY AND SHORT FICTION. NOW YOU PROBABLY WONDER WHAT ALL OF THIS HAS TO DO WITH THE ART OF MAKING BEAUTIFUL PHOTOGRAPHS. THAT ANSWER IS SIMPLE.
Storytelling has always been a big part of Ethan James’ life, and he considers photography as an extension of himself a writer. "Photography has somewhat replaced the words I used to pen to paper, combining all the senses into a visual medium," he explains. "It’s a different form of storytelling, sometimes more challenging to capture so much content in a single image or a series of images."
Ethan James’ photography is all about mood and tone, and if the images could speak, it would also be about voice. To Ethan the final meaning of the image rests with the viewer in whatever he or she decides what story was created. The photos presented here are about how we exist in light and dark, openly and esoterically, what is and what could become. "It is my hope that people view these images and see more than a pretty picture or a 'hot' guy and so forth. I strive to convey life in my photography, demonstrating that the people are living, breathing presentations of our own fears, hopes, insecurities, strengths and much more."
For Ethan James photography is all about the eye. Being a photographer who learned the art in the original darkroom before picking up digital photography, he understands and recognizes the seduction of the latest technologies that can so easily develop a disconnection between vision and completion. He is not against progression, but still likes to marvel at what people can create with flashlights and off-brand editing software. And that shows in his fantastic work.
Ethan continues explaining his passion for photography: "Photography has become an integral part of my daily happenings, and I can only hope that it continues to allow me to work with interesting people domestically and across international waters in all aspects of the field. I would like to thank BeautifulMag on behalf of the great guys who worked with me on these featured images, and for allowing me to spin a little about photography and its importance in my life. I look forward to returning and presenting more images to BeautifulMag readers in the future." –B-
