EVEN THOUGH DECEMBER 31 REALLY ONLY INDICATES THE END OF A MONTH, SOMEONE, SOMETIME, DECIDED THAT THIS IS ALSO THE DAY FOR MOST CALENDARS THAT SHOULD ANNOUNCE THE END OF A YEAR CYCLE. AND SO, THIS HAS BECOME THE DAY TO LOOK BACK AT WHAT WAS, AND FORWARD TO WHAT MIGHT COME.
By definition, December 31 is the day to remember all those happy moments that brought joy in our hearts. But also the sad things, with a tear and now, after some time has passed, possibly a little smile. Time passes fast. While it only seems like yesterday when we celebrated the arrival of a new millenium now 2008 is finished and before we know it we are at the end of the first decade of the 21st century.
We from Beautiful have worked hard to give you what you deserve, which is the best. We hope we have been able to satisfy your expectations. 366 days with almost just as many articles… it is too much to thank everybody who participated and cooperated in person. Instead we do a general thank you to all of you who has been so kind to submit their work, and all of you who have been so kind to visit our digital pages every day. Still we want to mention a few of the highlights of 2008 on BeautifulMag, hoping that these memories will also refill your hearts with joy and bring back that little smile with or without a small tear.
This year we introduced the BeautifulMag Cover, a feature well appreciated by you as reader, and – if possible – even more by those many artists who asked for this special feature. 2008 was also the year in which we presented to you our Beautiful Projects. In October that was the series Chronicles Of Desire, a wonderful poetic gallery based on ancient myths and legends, and visualized in a contemporary way by Mexican photographer Damian Siqueiros. And last January we brought you The Prophecy, the first project produced by BeautifulMedia/BeautifulMag: a digital fresco created by Aymeric Giraudel specially for Beautiful, which we were able to offer you in high res quality for free. The Prophecy was, and still is, a huge success, and the trailer alone already became one of the top videos on YouTube this year.
Beautiful has successfully transformed itself in a true showcase for fantastic male photography, sometimes on the edge, but never too much. That this is appreciated by you, proofs the highly successful SEX week brought you in October this year.
We met many people, talked to many artists and with them created many stories. We had interviews with a colorful variety of people, like photographers Ronald N. Tan, Ethan James, Simon ‘Hotsnapz’ Barnes and Joe Oppedisano, celebrities Matt Riddlehoover, Michael Biserta, Bryan Hawn, Chi Chi Larue and and models like Levi Poulter, Cody Fallon, Fred Faurtin, Brent Diggs and Lucky Daniels. There were more, many more. As well as other participants, like Thomas Synnamon, Jeff Brewster, Kristopher Kelly, Dylan Rosser, German Armenta, Justin Monroe, Eric Schwabel… too many to mention… we thank you all, you wonderful artists, for your ongoing participation and great work, we thank you all, the ones that have so generously financially supported us and we thank you all, you who visit us so loyal every day.
GIVEN THE AMOUNT OF CALENDARS AVAILABLE IN THIS TIME OF THE YEAR, WE DECIDED ALREADY LAST YEAR IT HARDLY DOABLE TO HIGHLIGHT THEM ALL. SO WE THOUGHT IT TO BE A NICE GESTURE TO ONLY PRESENT YOU SOME THAT ARE REALLY WORTH PRESENTING. JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE DIFFERENT.
No why is this one different from the others, we hear you ask. Well, that answer is very simple. The guys who present themselves on this calendar, present themselves as they are. No stadium gods. No half naked uniform men. No ‘snapshots’ of athletes under a shower. But just honest and true men who turned sex in a career opportunity.
The Men of Rentboy.com 2009 Calendar is a 28 pages calendar in full color, with more than 70 photos by Dick Mitchell, featuring famous pornstars, hustlers, streetwalkers, flesh-peddlers, and boyfriends for hire. These are the real men of Rentboy.com, the delicious website where you can hire a man to sate your wildest desires. Some of the hottest names in porn posed for this year’s calendar, including Diesel Washington, Anthony Marks, Robert Van Damme, Barrett Long, Cory Koons, and Vin Nolan; alongside jet-setting international hunks “Gio”, “Timothy”, and “Jake”, who are known to their fans on a first-name basis only. For those with down-to-earth tastes, cuties Adam Isaac and Ago Viara look like the boys-next-door you always dreamed about.
Photographer Richard ‘Dick’ Mitchell is known in both the gay and mainstream media for his fashion, commercial, and feature photography. His work has appeared in GQ, Vogue, OUT, Unzipped, Mandate, and many other magazines. Dick and Rentboy.com worked together to create a unique documentary-like setting for each of this year’s calendar models, traveling to locations on the East and West Coasts of the United States. Hunting for the perfect location was an adventure in itself, where the models and photographer pushed the limits of outrageous, slutty poses permitted in public places. The resulting photos—like the men of Rentboy.com—are entertaining, spontaneous, full of personality, and always very sexy. –B-

10 Days ago the First Gay Rights Declaration, initiated by France and The Netherlands was presented to the United Nations and found well-deserved support by all 27 European Union members, as well as Japan, Australia, Mexico, Argentina and three dozen other countries. Even though a historical event, the victory is small. More than 70 U.N. members outlaw homosexuality, and in several of them homosexual acts can be punished by execution. There was broad opposition from Muslim nations as well as the Vatican, based on ‘religious grounds.’ But probably most disappointing was the refusal of the United States to sign the declaration, due to ‘legal questions that needed further review.’
Every time when the end of the year draws near, expectations and hopes rise high. What will the coming year bring. Happiness and joy, or sadness and disappointment? Longingly we are looking forward to the change of power in the United States, which doubtless will have its influence on the rest of our little world. Will we see the light of day in 2009, when a country that finally has been able to select a man of color for President can also accept homosexuality in all its rightful rights? Happiness and joy, or sadness and disappointment?
Closer to home, for sure things will change as well. We will meet people, maybe loose some on the way as well. Friendship, love. Happiness and joy, or sadness and disappointment? It is all part of our lives and a year wouldn’t be complete without it.
Ciao, the new film by Yen Tan and Alessandro Calza, is a beautiful portrait of happiness and sadness, a perfect example of the unexpected events that can turn your world and your life upside down, for good or for worse. We learned first about this film about two years ago, while talking to co-writer and actor Alessandro Calza, and are happy this beautiful story finally made it to the silver screen for big audience to enjoy.
Happiness and joy, or sadness and disappointment? It all lies ahead of us, but it is also what we leave behind. 2008 has been another year full of happenings that have found there own place in our long history. Even though prefer looking forward, we do decide to take a little look back, and we do this with Malemodel.nl photographer Gert Kist in a most desirable way. Gert gives us his vision of some very beautiful moments he has encountered.
This is our last cover for 2008, and the first for 2009. It is fresh, it is new and it is full of hope. As we are. –B-

IN THE CLASSIC STORY OF BOY MEETS GIRL, PHOTOGRAPHER JEFF BREWSTER HAS A WHOLE NEW CHAPTER TO ADD. WHICH GOES MORE LIKE GIRL TRYING TO MEET BOY ENDING UP BY HAVING THE BOY MEETING THE BOY AND THE GIRL OUT OF THE PICTURE. LITERALLY.
Some time ago, Texas based photographer Jeff Brewster received an email from a girl who was interested in modeling. The email included a photo showing her and her boyfriend at that time. Being the nice guy Jeffrey is, he answered the girl and during the conversation inquired about the identity of the guy on the photo. Next thing he knew he had him in front of the camera.
Aaron Keener is an 18 years old corn fed country boy from a very very small town in Central Texas. Fresh out of high school he now attends college where he does wrestling and gymnastics. In his free time he likes working out, hanging out with his friends – which by the way most likely does no longer include the earlier mentioned girl who is now the ex-girlfriend – and after this first session maybe modeling as well.
Aaron’s session with Jeff Brewster was his first ever, which makes the series you see here today a world exclusive. And the ex-girlfriend? Well, as of today, Jeff has still not met her and she seems to be out of Aaron’s picture as well. He is now living with his college buddies and enjoying the college life. –B-
YOU BETTER WATCH OUT, YOU BETTER NOT CRY. YOU BETTER NOT POUT, I’M TELLING YOU WHY. SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO TOWN. HE’S MAKING A LIST, HE’S CHECKING IT TWICE. HE’S GONNA FIND OUT WHO’S NAUGHTY OR NICE. SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO TOWN.
Santa Claus has become a very busy man over the years. Were his destinations limited a few years back, he now flies his sleight all over the world. Still there are a few countries left where they celebrate the original Saint Nicolas tradition in the beginning of December (Santa Claus is derived from the Dutch Sinterklaas, a free translation of Saint Nicolas). And even though history tells us this Saint origins from Turkey, tradition has placed him in Spain. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that we actually found some very nice goodies for you in that very same Espagne.
For this Holiday season, the designers of ES Collection, the Barcelona based swim and undergear company who invented the patented wonderslip for men, came up with some very original and funny Christmas slips and boxers that gives a whole new meaning to the name Christmas balls. So if you are hoping to find some of these most comfortable pieces under your tree this year, just remember: He sees you when you're sleeping, he knows when you're awake, he knows when you've been bad or good, so be good for goodness sake! –B-
ES Collection and BeautifulMag are official sponsore of the 2009 European Gay Ski Week, taking place in Tignes, March 21 - 28, 2009.
