He came close to being a doctor, which would have been a loss for all of us who like beautiful photography. Jorge Rivas comes from a family of doctors, and thus it only seemed logical he would follow that same road. And so he started his career by studying medicine for 4 years, focusing on the art of plastic surgery. Already then he was drawn to the human body and the means to perfect it.
Jorge Rivas was born in Durango, Mexico, in 1974. Ever since he was young he had the ability to notice the smallest details and a great sense of creativity. Which eventually led him to also study Architecture and Graphic Design, which – as you can imagine – was a radical change in the way Jorge’s family was making a living. Still it was his father who gave Jorge his first camera, and by doing so, he provided his son with a tool that would become the means of his living. Jorge followed his studies by opening a photo studio in his hometown, and his profession allowed him to travel to a variety of countries. Dreaming of once becoming a successful fashion photographer, Jorge eventually decided to close his shop, move to Massachusetts and follow a study in professional photography. Not long after that he took another big step towards realizing his dreams: Jorge moved to New York City.
Fascinated by the glamor of fashion magazines, and hoping one day he will be in them, Jorge sought out some of the most recognized photographers of New York’s fashion scene, hoping he could have a chance to work with them. This eventually brought him on a path that led to meeting and working with Joe Oppedisano. Not once, but on several occasions Jorge had the chance to assist Joe in his work, which has resulted for Jorge in finding a great friendship and a wonderful source of inspiration. And when you work with one of the best, it can’t be long before you are recognized yourself as well. In Jorge Rivas’ case it was by a Dallas based company, who asked him to do some work for the NFL. And so Jorge moved to Dallas, where he currently lives and works on realizing his dream to be one day a known and respected photographer, and among those he so admires. –B-

Hopefully, someday Jorge could produce a calendar and/or DVD featuring NFL players here in the USA, similar to the 2009 "Gods of Football" calendar and DVD recently released that featured rugby players from Australia. Now that would be beautiful.
