There is an episode of STAR TREK classic, entitled "The Enemy Within" in which a transporter malfunction causes Captain Kirk to be split into two personalities, one good, and one evil.

The "good" Captain Kirk is kind, gentle, intelligent, and empathetic, yet unable to make command decisions in critical situations. The "evil" Captain Kirk, on the other hand, is ruthless, cruel, sexually dysfunctional, and not too bright, yet decisive when it is needed.

It is determined that for Captain Kirk to be restored to his former, fully functional and balanced self, the two separate personalities will have to be thrust back together again because each possesses unique qualities that the other does not have, and we cannot be complete individuals without both our "good" and "evil" halves.

Thankfully, a return trip through the repaired transporter restores Kirk to his normal commanding presence, providing a good illustration of the necessity of having balance in our lives, with the sugar complementing the spice.
