Simon Barnes has been with us since – well not the beginning – but for a long time already. We love his work. We love his vision and his style and his theatrical approach in his settings and portraits. We also love his choice in models. Such as Fabio Santos. Fabio, with his beautifully and naturally shaped body, his masculine face and his melancholic eyes. We introduced Fabio through the lens of Simon first in December 2008, unaware of the fact that this beautiful man from Brazilian origin would, only one year later, become, temporarily, the face of BeautifulMag, in his exclusive role as the cover model of BeautifulVision, our anthology book. And since so many of you asked about him, we decided to ask him to tell us a bit more about himself. It all started with his wish to accomplish something for himself…
Fabio, born in Brazil, how did you end up living in London?
Fabio: My life in Brazil was never easy but I had a lot of friends and I was happy. I’ve always been very sportive and practiced volleyball, tennis and football (to semi professional level). However things changed when I started university at the tender age of 16. I had to get a job to pay for my university fees and couldn’t afford to keep up all my sporting hobbies. I had started Capoeira at the age of 15 and that was the only hobby I could afford to keep going. This made me realize I needed to make something happen in my life if I wanted to get somewhere. I was planning on getting my Engineering degree in Brazil but needed to speak English for that. Instead of embarking on a study to learn English I thought it would be cheaper and better to go to the UK and learn the language first hand. That is how I eventually ended up in London when I was 18.
That must have been pretty hard…
Fabio: Yes, it was tough when I first arrived here in the UK as I couldn’t speak a word of English and didn’t know anyone, but a few years down the line and things have turned out quite well. I now teach Capoeira and do shows and performances around the world and my modeling career has taken off too.
Let’s talk about that for a bit. You have entered the world of modeling since a few years now. We have seen you first on the site of London based photographer Simon ‘Hotsnapz’ Barnes. What made you decide to try this venture?
Fabio: Before I met Simon I had already done a few TV adverts, fashion shows and opening shows but this was always through my Capoeira or Parkour activities. I had tried modeling before with other photographers but these jobs were mainly action shoots. Simon introduced a new style of modeling to me. I learn a lot from Simon and became more confident and began enjoying other types of modeling.
And how is it paying off? Do you get good offers?
Fabio: Well, it really did pay off. Modeling opened more doors and created more opportunities for me. I have been offered some very good jobs.
What kind of modeling job do you prefer to do?
Fabio: I prefer fitness modeling jobs and action shoots. Guess that is the result of by sports background. But I have learned to enjoy them all now.
Fabio, knowing you are a straight guy, how do you feel about the fact your photos appear on gay oriented sites?
Fabio: For me it feel perfectly normal ☺. Because this is my work. And as long I am happy with the photographs and the job I’ve done, that’s what matters!
Among other things, our readers also recognize you as the figure head of our anthology book BeautifulVision. The book is a representation of BeautifulMag and, in some of the chapters, pushes the envelope a bit more. How do you feel being featured as cover boy?
Fabio: I feel great, happy and proud to be on the cover of BeautifulVision. Hopefully for me, through this many more modeling opportunities will appear ☺.
Tell us a bit more about your sport activities. You are a passionate practicer of
Capoeira….
Fabio: I love what I do, Capoeira has been everything for me, it’s the air that I breathe, the water that I drink, the food that I eat. It’s my passion and it’s my work. I’ve also made some amazing friends through Capoeira and it has taught me so much! Capoeira completes me through and through!
Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now?
Fabio: I really don’t know, I miss my family a lot, so sometimes I feel like I want to go back to Brazil, but on the other hand my friends and work are here now. Plus I believe there are still a lot of good opportunities waiting for me here, so the truth is I don’t know where I will be in 5 years time.
Anything you would like to say to our readers?
Fabio: Thank you and hope you enjoy the photos! –B-
