SINCE 1988 THE 1ST OF DECEMBER HAS BECOME KNOWN AS THE WORLD AIDS DAY. THIS YEAR WORLD AIDS DAY IS DEDICATED TO UNIVERSAL ACCESS AND HUMAN RIGHTS.CURRENTLY THERE ARE 33,3 MILLION PEOPLE LIVING WITH HIV, AMONG THEM 2,5 MILLION CHILDREN. THESE PEOPLE NEED HELP. HELP IN FINDING A CURE. BUT ALSO HELP IN FINDING UNDERSTANDING AND ACCEPTANCE. WORLD AIDS DAY IS DAY ABOUT RAISING MONEY, INCREASING AWARENESS, FIGHTING PREJUDICE AND IMPROVING EDUCATION.
One of those 33,3 million people living with the HIV virus is Jack Mackenroth. Fashion designer, model and athlete, Jack has lived honestly and openly with his status since he was diagnosed in 1990. Jack Mackenroth is a role model for many HIV infected men and women, and keeps proving with his public accomplishments that being diagnosed with HIV still allows you to live a normal life and doesn’t make you anything different from anyone else. New York based photographer Frank Louis shot Jack in a setting specially created for World AIDS Day and BeautifulMag.
Frank Louis: "Jack wears his HIV status like superman and I love him for that. I hope these images make their way to someone who may be struggling to come to terms with their own status and makes them feel as unstoppable as Jack."
Our world lives with AIDS and the HIV virus since the 1980’s and sometimes it seems we are geting used to it. We don’t hear about it that much anymore. It is no longer news. Still, in 2009, 2,6 million people became newly infected with the virus and an estimated 1,8 million people died of AIDS. This needs to stop. Our help – your help – is desperately needed. –BM-
