5 YEARS OF WORK, ALREADY PRESENTED TO YOU 2 YEARS AGO ON BEAUTIFULMAG. 53 MEN FROM AROUND THE WORLD. MEN YOU WANT TO LOOK AT. MEN YOU WANT TO LOOK LIKE. MEN YOU WANT TO FALL IN LOVE WITH. WE HAVE WAITED FOR IT SINCE A LONG TIME, BUT SOME THINGS SIMPLY ARE WORTH WAITING FOR. THE BOYS AND THE BEACH ARE DEFINITLY ONE OF THOSE THINGS.
Miami Beach resident Max-Arthur Mantle is a renowned photographer who can look back on a glorious career with many important publications. He participated to a variety of Bruno Gmünder anthologies and his work graced the pages and covers of international magazines such as Genre, Instinct and Mate. Max-Arthur had two covers with the legendary Australian magazine Blue, including the very last edition of the glossy bimonthly. But never had Max-Arthur his own publication. Until now that is.
It took him 5 years of shooting, but that is OK because quality can not be rushed. He expended his original total of 19 models to 53 and that is OK as well, because we can never have enough examples of beautiful men. And with these men he laid out 160 photography pages that all come together under one common theme: boys on the beach. One might say that that is not so original and indeed it has been done (but than again, what hasn’t been done already). But if you think that you forget that Max-Arthur Mantle is a world class photographer, meaning that if he takes a at first glance fairly simple theme, you can be assured he will turn it into something spectacular.
Allow us to quote world renowed actor and writer David Leddick when he introduces Max-Arthur Mantle’s The Boys and The Beach Vol.1: "There’s something very 21st century about the photographs of Max-Arthur Mantle. In the past models were frequently chosen because they looked ideal. They were types. Not individuals. Like the classic statue, they were smooth, marble-like, well-proportioned but not individuals. Max-Arthur Mantle’s men have personality. It’s not so much that they look into the camera but that when you look at them you know who they are. What they are like. Now when we see the nude it is not so much that he is revealing himself, he is presenting himself as he really is. This is not someone pretending to be someone else. This is a real person who wants to strip down and show you everything so you know who he is completely."
The 21st century is all about reality. It is about living your life to its fullest. Maximum fulfillment. You can only do this when you live your life the way you want it. By not pretending to be someone or something else. Max-Arthur Mantle understands this and has brought that to life with his portraits. His photographs are staring you in the face with a bold simplicity, accentuated by the openness of white sand beaches and intimacy of small rock formations. Honest settings that function as the perfect backdrop to display the genuine beauty of his male models, drenched in sand or speckled with hundreds glistening water drops.
The Boys and The Beach Vol. 1 was shot on location in New York, Los Angeles and Miami, and is the first of a trilogy with future volumes that will show the beaches of Rio de Janeiro and Ibiza. It took a bit longer than anticipated, but the wait was definitely worth it. The Boys and The Beach Vol.1 is available for purchase on Blurb.com. –BM-
