AFTER HE SAW THE WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR EXHIBITION AT THE NATIONAL HISTORY MUSEUM, THERE WAS NO DOUBT IN DOUGLAS ALLEN DEACON’S MIND. AFTER ALL, HE HAD BEEN SHOOTING LANDSCAPES FOR EYARS ALREADY. AND SO HE DECIDED THIS HAD TO BE IT. THIS WAS HIS CHOSEN PATH.
It is most interesting how certain places we visit, or certain things we see, can inspire us to choose to do something that than will dramatically change our lives. Douglas Allen Deacon had lived for 21 years in Southeast Asia, where he photographed travel and landscapes which he got published as well. Back in the United Kingdom where he originates from, one visit at the National History Museum allowed him a glimpse on his future. Inspired by the fantastic photographs of wild animals at the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibition, Douglas knew for sure. This is what he was meant to do. Capturing wild, untamed animals with his camera.
Douglas Allen Deacon could not have been further from the truth. Or was he? Inspired by what he saw during that memorable visit to the museum, he went out, bought himself a top of the range Nikon film camera and started his wildlife photography career with great enthusiasm. Until another memorable visit made him change his mind. This time a visit to a gym where a friend asked him to shoot his portraits while he was op peak form. Both Doug and his mate were over the moon with the results and the photos got shown around to other guys at the gym who then asked for the same favor. The circle soon became wider and one day Douglas found himself traveling a very different jungle than he intended when he choose his career path.
One of the bodybuilder who appeared in front of Doug’s lens turned out to be a Gladiator from SKY TV and after working with him to complete an online fan page portfolio, Douglas received word from Muscle and Fitness Magazine, which led to four prominent publications. Finally, after being introduced to Model Mayhem, Douglas became exposed to a wealth of great models and their sheer professionalism changed his work dramatically. Douglas Allen Deacon, now living in Wimbledon, has transformed himself into a successful photographer of pure masculinity. Rugged, muscle men have found their way to his camera just as easy as not too long ago African lions and brown bears did. And if you look closely to these photos – the intensity on Sam face, the virility of muscle bear Kevin – it is obvious Douglas Allen Deacon did not completely say farewell to his first passion. All together, not a bad move me thinks. –BM-
