All though history, the Dutch have been a people that have always surprised the world. The Netherlands, small as the country is, has certainly deserved its place on the map of the world. All through history the Dutch have made name for themselves with their smart trade abilities. It is also a people of non-nonsense, accepting the facts and making the best of it. Which they proofed over and over again in their ingenious ability to build great water works. The country has also brought forth many great artists, and not few of them have used the stunning Dutch landscape as their inspiration. But one thing The Netherlands are not so known for is fashion design. Although over the past years, there seems to be quite a trend in this industry and Amsterdam has even be whispered to become a new fashion capital. Have the Dutch opened another unexpected source of geniality?
Addy van den Krommenacker, Victor & Rolf, Antoine Peters, Marlies Dekkers… they are just a few of the names that have become equivalent for Dutch fashion design. The creative and inventive spirit of the Dutch even made it all the way into the higher levels of stardom, having designers Bart Hess, Iris van Herpen and Jan Taminiau among the favorites of Lady Gaga. Yes there seems to be a whole new wave of creativity coming from the Low Lands. And, obviously, where there is fashion, there is fashion photography. So it should not come as a big surprise that, also in The Netherlands, we have found a fashion and portrait photographer of international allure.
Herman Chow was born in one of the finest cities in the world, Singapore but has chosen Amsterdam as his professional playing ground. Having been fascinated by art and photography since he was very young, Herman soon found inspiration in the famous Dutch landscapes after moving to the small European country. Like so many artists before him. Roughly two years ago, Herman Chow bought himself a camera and started shooting around, rapidly developing his skills. And while doing so, he saw his interest shifting from the natural landscapes towards the colorful scenery of fashion and portraiture. In relatively short time Herman Chow has made name for himself as a fashion and male model photographer. Not yet full-time but that is probably only a matter of time, it is Herman’s biggest dream to make it in the fashion industry, and he seems to be on the right track. Even though born in Singapore, Herman Chow proofs once again, by practicing his art, where a small country can be great. –BM-
