Bright and young Rhoda Williams has been accepted in the astrophysics program at MIT. Too celebrate she parties too hearty. While driving home she turns on the radio and that innocent action will forever change her life. A new planet, four times the size of the Moon, has appeared in the sky of Earth. It is indeed another Earth, except, due to some kind of unexplainable tear in the universe, this Earth comes from another universe and is very much the same as the one we live on. Occupied by this amazing news, Rhonda peers out of the car window to the sky and crashes into another car, killing a mother and child and sending the father into a coma.
When Rhonda is released from prison a few yeas later she learns that the man whose family she has destroyed, a composer named John Burroughs, has emerged from his coma. Devastated by what she has done, she is determined to visit him and apologize and make amends. Bu arriving on John’s doorstep, she finds a broken man, living as a depressed recluse and she can’t bring herself doing what she intended to do. And so she makes up a story about doing house cleaning. Rhonda and John start to know each other and there relationship start to bloom into something deeper and romantic, but Rhonda knows there is this big secret between them that can change everything. John still doesn’t know who she really is.
Entering a contest which is offering a civilian flight to the other nearby Earth, Rhonda is selected to be one of the first to travel to the looming planet. After John begs her not to go, she finally decides to come clean and tells him the truth. Heart broken John forces her out of his home. While preparing her travel, Rhonda than learns that life on the other Earth was identical to ours until the moment it appeared in our reality. Hoping that her identical self on the other Earth has not made the same mistakes she has made, she decides to return to John and offers him the ticket, hoping he can find his wife and child still alive on the nearby planet. John accepts and becomes one of the first travelers, leaving Rhonda behind and alone. Until months later, when Rhonda returns home one day and upon approaching her backdoor she finds someone standing in front of her… herself…
Directed by Mike Cahill Another Earth is a the everyday story of the string of events that colour our lives. If Rhonda had not been drinking too much, if she had listened to another radio station, or if John had not be on the road at the wrong place and the wrong time, everything would have been different. The fatal crash ended the list of ifs for John’s family. But what if there was a possibility to right all wrongs, to give life another change and another turn. Another Earth offers that possibility.
