NEW YORK CITY IS PROBABLY ONE OF THE MOST, IF NOT THE MOST INSPIRING PLACES ON EARTH. MANY WHO COME BACK FROM A FIRST TIME VISIT CLAIM TO HAVE BEEN CAPTURED BY THE CONCRETE AND GLASS BEAUTY AND THE DYNAMIC PULSE OF THE CITY. NEW YORK IS A BEATING HEART AND EVERYONE WHO GOES THERE GETS AFFECTED BY IT. NO WONDER IT IS AMONG OTHER THINGS THE MECCA OF TODAY’S ART SCENE.
Many creative talents were born or lived at some point in their life in New York City. Artists Keith Haring, Salvador Dali and Kaws, are among them. Photographers Steven Klein, Terry Richardson and David LaChapelle as well. Six renowned names in the world of commercial and fine arts that are also of great importance for yet another wonderful artist who dwells in that magical and breath taking world that is New York: Marco Ovando.
Marco Ovando was born in Guatemala City in 1974 but has since then changed his habitat for New York. Here, in this buzzing and sparkling centre of the world, Marco moves around in the vibrant nightlife, finding inspiration by surrounding himself with the all the edgy, weird-looking and beautiful people that share that space with him. Those are the ones that catch him. Those are the people that drive him to create is art. Marco Ovando is an observer and it was that ability that eventually brought him to express himself through photography. And that he does it well proofs the fact Marco’s photo’s have been published widely by magazines such as Next and Maxim, and his work graced brands such as Sephora and, today, Baskit underwear.
The world is captured by the Olympic Games and so what better theme could Marco Ovando have chosen for his Baskit assignment than sports. Featuring models Carlos Jadraque, Jimmy Gonzales, Anton Antipov, Char DeFrancesco, Avi Vichner and Johnny LoiSada, Marco created a basic setting of two extremes: before and after the fight. And whereas the models definitely catch they eye with their pure masculinity and sexy features, it is Baskit underwear that steals the real show in this athletic but simple set up. As usual, Marco Ovando’s portraits are sexy, bright and tasteful with a healthy dose of sexual energy. Seeing this men in their undies, both as challengers and victors, almost makes you feel you are witnessing a battle between sexy men and their underwear. Marco named this series Winners and Losers but we seriously wonder who is the real winner here: the boys wearing the comfortable briefs and boxers or the Baskit brand hugging those firm tights and buttocks. –BM-
