EDITORS LETTER
Today is the 7th of October of the year 2012. By itself not so special, except as of today we apparently have exactly 75 days left before everything comes to an end. It was first predicted by the ancient Maya’s and is since then proven wrong. But that didn’t stop other religions and social movements to gratefully pick up on yet another doomsday story. And so we are facing a possible major event happening towards the end of this year, which may result in the end of the world, or in the world as we know it. Now that last scenario seems much more like it.
Nothing happens by itself. Major and history turning events have always been the result of string of smaller events building up to an almost inevitable climax. A chain of eruptions of the Icelandic volcano Laki between 1783 and 1784 triggered catastrophic weather changes which led to the collapse of the economy of one of the richest nations in Europe: France. This by itself eventually brought forth the French Revolution, which not only changed the political system in France but also influenced the rest of the world. The 1929 Beurskrach was not only a major event by itself, it also rippled down over the rest of the world, destroying economies, which eventually helped bringing a man named Hitler to absolute power in Germany and we all know what happened after that. Do you want me to go on? Now none of these events have destroyed the world, but they surely changed the cause of history and brought us into a new era afterwards. Interesting enough is that most of the times it is the fall of economic systems that are the catalysts.
Personally I’m not a believer of the total destruction of Earth in December, but at the same time there are things set in movement that might very well change the world as we know it today. And once again, economy plays a role. The American Presidential Elections are taking place as we speak and never before could there have been a bigger difference between candidates. And how scary is it that a man as conservative and traditional as Governor Romney can gain so much popularity. Think about it, will America and yes, the rest of the world, really be better of with a man like that at the steering wheel? I have my doubts. And looking at the east, what is going on there. Major shifts have happened resulting is stronger regimes and power behaviors we though we had left behind us a long time ago. A behavior that now results in a ban on free opinion and a dangerous life situation for gay men and women in countries such as Russia and the Ukraine. Again, I don’t think these events will lead to the destruction of the world, but it most certainly gives us something to think about. If December 21 is going to be the turning day, we have 75 days to make a change. Let’s not sit and wait until a meteorite is going to hit the Earth. Let’s try to do the right thing and take the future in our own hands. –BM-
