Alex Wightman was born on the 20th October 1986. Throughout his schooling life he had always been more involved in the creative arts. He studied Fine Art at the University of Hertfordshire and graduated in the year of 2009. When he graduated he then worked for a photography company for a year and a half before deciding to become self employed. Alex didn’t study photography but instead self taught himself the technical aspects of using a camera and equipment, however the creative approach to photography has been nurtured during his education.
Being a young gay man himself it is no surprise Alex Wightman main customers are male models. He creates portfolios for aspiring models or men who want the images for themselves. In his own words Alex talks about his work: “My photography is quite diverse; I photograph nearly everything from weddings through to male models. I try to keep my weddings separate from my male photography however. Because I’m a gay male I find other men approach me to take their photo because they might be gay themselves and feel comfortable around me. But saying that I also get straight men approach me because I know how to make men look good. The way I work is actually quite simple, I am very good at using space to interact with the model. For me the space in which I’m working in is just as important as the model and so I work to have both elements complement one another.”
Alex Wightman likes working on location more so than in a studio setting. Because working on location is so much more of a challenge and he really enjoys the unpredictability of it. "When you’re shooting on location the world is your oyster and anything can happen. In a studio setting I know my limitation. I know what I have and haven’t got to work with." Alex’s work is becoming increasingly more recognized within the photography world and has had publications in magazines around the world and various features online. In the great scheme of things Alex is new to the photography world but is already making a splash! –BM-
