In contrary to what many believe, Miami is not Florida’s capital city. The city who holds that honor is Tallahassee. Talla what? Right. Not many might have heard about this city. But that is going to change right now right here. Because Tallahassee will forever go in history as the place where photographer Anthony Humphreys was born.
Anthony Humphreys’ first education doesn’ differ that much from many other photographers. He went to school at Full Sail University in Orlando, FL for Digital Arts. But after that he continued onward to receive his Master of Science in Entertainment Business. Once finished he moved to South Florida and focused on a design career. The reason Anthony actually got more and more involved in photography is one that many graphic designers like him have to deal with. Getting tired of having to buy stock images and charge his clients for that, he boldly concluded that he should be able to shoot himself what he needed for his design work. And so he went out, bought a camera and did exactly that: replacing the usual stock photos for the same cheesy shots but by his own hand. Until a friend working for Wilhelmina Models found himself in a situation that an assigned photographer bailed just before a test shoot and, knowing Anthony had a camera and some experience, desperately begged for his help.
To make a long story short, much to Anthony’s shock, the agency loved his photos and started to use him more. His portfolio expanded and so did his name as photographer. For the next 2 years Anthony Humphreys focused on photography but eventually he also started to take on design assignments again, and inevitably the two started to blend together. In contrary to many other artists, Anthony was not born in a very artistic family. However they have always been supportive for Anthony’s creative escapees. According to the artist himself, it is mostly his large group of friends who are to blame for his artistic mindset.
Now living in Miami South Beach Anthony Humphreys is honest about his environment:” Considering I am not a huge fan of landscape in general, I can't say that South Florida alone is a huge inspiration to me. However, I absolutely love bodies of water and the heat. I don't think there is anything better in the world than driving really fast down a back road in my little blue car, blasting electronica music with the windows down and feeling the ocean breeze. I get most of my insane ideas while I am driving and by myself. I also love the juxtaposition of pretty and ugly. There is an abundance of grungy, broken down, graffiti painted areas of Miami that I cannot get enough of. I really find an art in finding a disgusting place that nobody would ever consider beautiful, place a gorgeous model in the scene, shoot it from a weird angle and create something that suddenly is worth looking at.”
No matter the mood of the scene where Anthony Humphreys works – a studio, a beautiful location like Vizcaya or a disgusting alleyway – his focus is always the person. And since he is mostly attracted to individual personalities that bring something unusual to the world, his work is mostly quirky, weird and eclectic with a good dose of sexy, fun and even offensiveness. He finds all that in Miami and is happy to share that vision of the Magic City with us. –BM-
