Of Candy Canes and Christmas Treats

IT IS WIDELY BELIEVED THAT THE CANDY CANE FOUND ITS ORIGIN IN CHURCH. IN THE COLOGNE CATHEDRAL TO BE PRECISE. DURING THE CHRISTMAS SERMON IN THE YEAR 1670 THE CHILDREN WERE EXCEPTIONALLY LOUD AND NOISY. DESPERATE THE CHOIRMASTER LOOKED FOR A SOLUTION TO MAKE THEM QUIET AND , FOR ONE REASON OR THE OTHER, DECIDED TO GIVE THEM SUGAR CANDY STICKS. BUT SINCE HANDING OUR CANDY IN CHURCH WAS AGAINST THE RULES, HE BENT ORIGINAL STRAIGHT STICKS AT THE END, MAKING THEM LOOK LIKE A RELIGIOUS SHEPHERD’S CANE.

Others believe the candy cane has a much simpler history and are related to the return of Christmas carols. Indeed there once was a time when Christmas carols were forbidden due to its happy spirit. Christmas was after all a time of reflection more than celebration. But in Victorian England the Christmas carols found their way back in the Christmas traditions and with that came the homemade Christmas tree decorations, including the colorful candy cane.

A Christmas trees with twinkling lights and gleaming ornaments. Gifts wrapped in shiny papers underneath. A stocking hanging from the fireplace, a turkey on the table. Serene voices singing cheerful carols. And with a little bit of luck, snowflakes falling from a gray sky like soft feathers, covering the world in a downy blanket. Yes, Christmas is indeed a time of tradition and celebration. And of course special treats to make one feel good are a big part of it.

Over the past few years BeautifulMag has been creating it’s own Christmas tradition. And we do that with Malemodel.nl photographer Gert Kist. Since 5 years Gert has been offering us a Christmas treat that probably will never find its way in a traditional Christmas carol, but they definitely give a whole new meaning to candy canes. And this year is no exception to the custom. One more time Gert pulled that fluffy Christmas hat out of the closet and dressed his men in sexy underwear – if anything at all – to give us a the promise of a nice and cozy Christmas Eve. A nice addition this year is the fact that, where Gert usually works with single models, this year he teamed them up. Because traditions are good but we do want our candy to be sweeter ever year.
