A while ago I was in a nice boutique hotel in Moscow. Forced to spend some time in the lobby/hotel bar I got quite bored and started to look around and take in the details. To my surprise I saw quite some security cameras. Giving it a good look I quickly counted over 20! In that space alone. And that made me wonder, how private are we these days.
You all might know Simon Sherry-Wood from a few years back. If not his handsome looks, than at least his remarkable name. Yes indeed, Simon was that incredible hottie who was the cherry – or should we say sherry – on the cake of The Real World Season 13 back in 2003. 18 Years old at that time, Simon was openly gay for 2 years already with the full support of family and friends back in Dublin where he originates from. And with a brand new relationship in his pocket he experienced as no other what it was like to try to live your life as good as you can while constantly being followed by TV cameras.
Marco Ovando is a photographer based in New York City. He is also a good friend of earlier mentioned Simon Sherry-Wood. Knowing Simon from his Real World days and how he changed over the past decade, Marco initiated to do a shoot to show the real world what Simon looks like today. The theme, how else could it be with Simon’s reality TV history: voyeurism. And so, on Marco’s suggestion, Simon rented a room in a very interesting hotel in New York, where the rooms go for $60.00 per 3 hours. Doing what people do in such hotels, including the usage of the hotels adult TV channel, Simon indulged into a 3 hour period of absolute privacy. Except, he wasn’t alone, was he now.
Marco Ovando treated his photos with a special effect, making them look like grainy snapshots taken by a security camera secretly installed in Simon’s hotel room. The unique atmosphere and smell in the room, and probably the fact he was being spied upon, got the naughtiness out of Simon. Seemingly unaware, but strategically showing his best sides, Simon poses. Oblivious of the fact the rest of the world is watching. And though it is exciting to be a secret part of this, it does make you wonder, doesn’t it. How private are we during those moments when we think we are alone . –BM-
