Joan Crisol had worked with Bruno Gmunder before on his first photo book, which became a huge success. Grateful for their support, Joan thought it would be a nice touch to do something in return. Something that would be both visually spectacular and extremely erotic. Bel Ami came instantly to mind. But Bel Ami through the eyes of Joan Crisol.
After proposing his idea to Bel Ami man George Duroy, it wasn’t for long that Joan Crisol and his partner Jon found themselves in the Slovak Republic, surrounded by the famous men of the international porn film company. Joan recalls: "George Duroy’s hospitality left us in awe. Here was someone who really loves his job and the people he works with, and whose achievements speak for themselves. Yes, Bel Ami is a big company, but it’s also a big family."
Joan Crisol decided to split the photo shoot into two different locations in order to get an interesting contrast in the book. One shooting was organized in Ibiza. Together with fashion stylist Abraham Gutiérrez Joan created an ambiance which emphasizes the modern fetish and gay iconography side. This resulted in a look that is a bit more darker, more tough, than what we normally expect to se from the Bel Ami boys. The second shoot took place in Budapest. Here Joan worked with Mario Ville and together they created a more classic fetish look with strong references to vintage Tom of Finland style. Two different approached to portray the men from Bel Ami but due to their consistent casting and of course that typical Joan Crisol style that we have come to know so well from, among others, his excellent work for ES Collection, a photo book that weaves them seamlessly together into one volume of beautiful and classy photographs.
No only Joan Crisol enjoyed working on Bel Ami Rebels, the boys did as well, and it clearly shows: "The boys! Not only did they let us dress them up and characterize them in every possible way, but they always did it with a smaile on their face, giving us their best and always leaving us impressed: Kris Evans, Dolph Lambert, Ariel Vanean, the Peter Twins, Todd Rosset, Julien Hussey, Dario Dolce, Vadim Farrell, Harris Hilton, Luke Hamill, the Kinky Angels and a long list of boys who helped this project take shape and become what it is today." –BM-
