William Matias lives in Florida. He was born and raised in Orlando and, besides spending a short period in Maryland, has lived all his life in the Sunshine state. Which could very well explain his passion for loud colors. Living under the sun for most of the time can do that to a person. Currently still at College with the objective to get his Bachelors in graphic design but William’s main passion is photography. And if we say photography, we mainly talk about fashion photography.
Right from the beginning William Matias understood the importance of a name. To make it in this very competitive field, you need a name that stands out. That is unique and that is equivalent to your personal style. William choose the name Saitam Photography. Indeed, Saitam is Williams’ surname spelled backwards. “I came up with that one night a few years back and liked not only the sound of it but the fact that it was so uniquely mine,” William explains. “Many people stop in their tracks sometimes when they see the name and have to read it twice as sometimes they think it reads Satan instead of Saitam. I do like the fact that it does sound similar to Satan and yet it is not, it's a bit devilish without being so outright.”
That devilish character that hidden in his professional name is something that also comes out in William Matias’ work. One of his latest series with professional model LB for example. William and LB have worked together on several occasions already and it shows how well the two feel each other. The fact LB works as professional model for 15 years already helps as well of course. For this particular shoot William wanted a more Gothic feel to the overall set. What is interesting here is the usage of the light that creates a halo around LB’s head. And how, by changing his outfit and looks, he transforms himself from a saint-like figure into a more burlesque kind of character and even a James Bond look. William continues: “This is the most clothed he has been on my shoots and I gotta say he worked the outfits to the T. His muscles glisten with the hot lights in the studio and even when they are confined by shirts and trousers you can see his muscular physique poking through the fabric.” Williams preference for bright colors and outlandish concepts clearly come to their right in this set. A set that truly deserves the name Saitam Photography. –BM-
