If you ever had a boy next door, you know want we are talking about. He can manifest himself in different ways. He could be that next door guy popular with the other boys and idolized by the neighborhood girls. Or the opposite, a loner but nevertheless sexy in his innocence. He could also be the son of your neighbors, the one you see growing up into an adolescent, slowly. Still with that very same innocence. A charm he does not yet know he posses which makes him even more attractive. But no matter what form he takes, the boy next door is mostly the one you cannot touch. The forbidden fruit. And it is that aspect that makes him irresistible.
His name is Chris and he arrived at Troy Phillips’ loft apartment/studio for what was supposed to be a simple concept. A fashionable swimwear editorial. Nothing more or less than that. Pretty straight forward. But when Troy opened the door and saw Chris for the first time, he knew that no matter how simple the assignment was supposed to be, the result would be anything but that. FatE had sent him the archetype of the boy next door.
Troy Phillips took his chance. He set out to work with Chris and did what he was supposed to do. He shot the swimwear on Chris and it was everything he had dared to hope it would be. But then, seizing the moment, he decided to move into a different shoot with Chris. When Troy met Chris for the first time he immediately saw the boy next door potential in the young model. Chris has exactly that blooming masculinity that makes a guy so attractive. That combined with the innocent of a young puppy dog who looks into the world for the first time. Troy comments: “I photographed him in my loft apartment as the boy who happens to live next door. I think we all have that little fantasy of having the sexy college student next door knock on your door curious about you. After some talk and maybe a drink, he decides he would like to model for you since you're a photographer. This is just one of his curiosities.”
Together with Akimitsu Sadoi, Troy Phillips creates fine-art and editorial work which have been seen in various international publications. Troy debuted his professional photography career in 2005 with a fine-art portrait exhibition in new york at the prestigious National Arts Club, and has been exhibiting his works ever since. Native of Oklahoma, photography has been an interest for Troy ever since he was a teenager, and it really started to grow into a passion while living and working in Japan. Troy has a background in both design and counseling psychology, two things you can find back in his current work. Design obviously in the simple and pure compositions Troy seems to shake out of his sleeve. And psychology in the fact he seems to be able to pinpoint certain characters in the models he works with and place them in a context that accentuates their charm and sensuality. Wish You Were Here, published on BeautifulMag beginning of July is a perfect example of the combination of the two. The Boy Next Door is a worthy follow up. –BM-
