IN CONTRARY TO MANY OLD MASTERS, THE PAINTER CARAVAGGIO REACHED FAME DURING HIS YEARS BUT WAS FORGOTTEN VERY FAST AFTER HIS UNTIMELY DEATH. THE MAN WAS A GENIUS WHEN IT CAME TO HIS ART AND VISION, BUT HIS HECTIC LIFESTYLE RESULTED IN PEOPLE TURNING ON HIM AND EVENTUALLY A DEATHWARRANT AFTER HE KILLED A YOUNG MAN. IT WAS ONLY IN THE 20TH CENTURY, 300 YEARS AFTER HIS EARLY DEATH, THAT CARAVAGGIO BECAME RECOGNIZED FOR THE INFLUENCE HAD ON MODERN ART AND HIS INSPIRATION FOR MASTERS SUCH AS RUBENS, BERNINI AND REMBRANDT.
Photographer Gert Kist is a well-known name in the area of male photography. His work has appeared in several international magazines and add campaigns. Last year, during the weeks around Gay Pride in Amsterdam, Kist was able to draw a considerable amount of attention with his bristled aluminium print series. Still some do not recognize the artistic value of Gert’s portraits, claim them to be monotone and not inspirational. It’s true that Gert’s early work shows a certain repetition in style (not that there is anything wrong with that) but it must be said that the Dutch artist has always proofed that he is capable to produce some amazing work. And with his new series he will definitely silence any adversaries their might be of his work.
During the Gay Pride exhibit in Amsterdam Gert Kist will once again present a surprising photo technique that for sure will awe friend and foo: Fresh Boys on Aged Wood (Frisse Jongens op Oud Hout). Gert applies a tantalizing new technique for his ne collection, showing gorgeous young men in an assiduous, wooden surrounding. “The works seek to manifest themselves as an extension of the classical imagery of Caravaggio’s subtle eroticism, as well as with the New Romanticism,” Gert states. “Hence the title of the exhibition.” His new collection sure brings out a side of Gert not seen before and shows that he, like Caravaggio before him, is ever the visionary and daring artist, using the classic techniques to create ne winspirational art.
Strong contrast is one of Gert Kist’s specialties. By way of a daring use of lightness and darkness, he is able to create intriguing photographic images. He now also applies sharp contrast between model and material. The mysterious energy that is brought in front of his lens by the male models themselves, each in his own right a symbol of beauty and desirability, is explosively enhanced by the fact that each is immortalized against the backdrop of weathered planks. “In a sense, the photo is sprayed onto the base,” Gert explains, “The result is that the photo then becomes completely resistant to Ultra Violet light, through the use of special ink and lamps. It is a new technique, which ironically provides an aged effect.” Gert Kist very much enjoys the element of chance: “You cannot anticipate on everything. Ultimately, every bit of scrap wood is different; so that the drawings in the wood itself help to define the images.” In addition to the artistic value of the work, Gert also sees the workings of a decorative component. “Every photograph is a lovely display of Old mixing in with the New, which could fit both in a modern as in a classical interior.” For sure we can all agree Gert’s photo’s applied on scrap wood sure is a treat for the eye.
First, however, Gert Kist’s work can be seen at the Eduard Planting Gallery. The gallery specializes in contemporary photography by both nationally as internationally known photographers, as well as up-and-coming young talent.
