Dan Skinner had already been in the photography business for a number of years shooting covers for hetero romance novels when he had his epiphany to shoot gay book covers and make them as acceptable and mainstream as the others. This was 10 years ago, a big risk and, according to those in Dan’s close circle, probably not the most profitable thing to do. But Dan knew. Dan was sick and tired of seeing the stereotype man/woman images for every book cover – and advertisement – showing only one side of life and profiling that as the only side. It made him angry enough to do something about it. It made him ask the question that if we were here, why nobody saw us.
It hasn’t been an easy road to follow for Dan Skinner. At first there was little interest, but when Dan started to post his photographs on Devianart, both his covers and his more artistic work, he soon got discovered by European magazines that were a bit more liberal towards same sex art. Dan got the attention he wanted but with that also the haters. But Dan Skinner was determined and kept going, realizing that slowly more artists started to publish their photos of homosexual love on that same web site. Lately the call for equality, for acceptance of homosexual love in every possible situation of life, has become more and more important. Newspapers and TV talk about it. If not daily, than at least weekly. More and more movies and TV shows are being geared towards the gay community whilst finding acceptance among a mainstream public. But it is not enough. And so, Dan Skinner had another epiphany.
In his constant crusade for equality, Dan Skinner realized that there are very few literary gay works that are able find a mainstream crossover of acceptance. And so the idea to write a gay novel that could be read and accepted by everyone was born. Dan wanted to write a story that would appeal specifically to young readers who need to feel and learn more than anything that gay love is real love, acceptable love and “normal” love. He did not want to write a lecture though. He also wanted to write this story for those who already know and experienced gay love, to make them remember their first love with dreamy fondness. But more than anything, I wanted to give hope that it could endure no matter what because the world is not a pretty place and we have to accept that sometimes our "happily ever afters" have to connect with the realities of a changing world that pulls surprises on us.
Memorizing You tells the story of 2 high school boys from different walks of life who discover their desires and stealing their first kisses. It talks about a love that begins a secret life, hidden from their families and classmates. But as their passion grows, so does the danger of discovery. Their only hope is to create a separate world where every kiss is a treasure and every moment... memorable. The interesting element in Dan Skinners novel is not so much the fact that the story is about 2 boys who discover their love for each other, but that they come from different levels in society. Something that can happen to everyone. The fight for acceptance is a double one. And it is that meaning in Memorizing You that makes this a novel that is of interest for a both homosexual and heterosexual audience, without making a difference. With memorizing You Dan Skinner lays another bridge towards full acceptance and full equality. –BM-
