WHATEVER WE DO IN OUR LIFE, EVERY DECISION WE MAKE, IT LEAVES A MARK BEHIND. WE ARE LIVING AND BREATHING BEINGS AND OUR PRESENCE LEAVES AN IMPRINT IN LIFE AND THE LIVES OF OTHER PEOPLE. SO IT IS IMPORTANT THAT WHAT WE DO, WE DO IT AS GOOD AS WE CAN. THAT WE ARE CONSCIOUS ABOUT THE FACT THAT OUR ACTIONS INFLUENCE OTHER PEOPLES ACTIONS. THAT WE LEAVE A TRACE.
David Lachapelle is known for his photography in which often references to art history and social messages are hidden. His style which is often loud and colourful is being described as kitsch pop surrealism. The man himself as the Fellini of photography. Being so known, it can’t be avoided you leave a trace. You influence others. In the world of art, and in this particular case photography, it happens a lot. Artists inspire artists who inspire artists.
Demetrius Markee has always been drawn to the arts. And if we say drawn, we mean this almost literally. He grew up doodling and drawing whenever and wherever he could. Once he became a teenager, he moved to a more mature way of expressing himself creatively: through painting and sketching portraits. Demetrius has always liked the idea of being able to capture a moment in time that would live on forever and while in college he realized that, he could do that much faster with a camera instead of painting. And this is how his career in photography kicked off.
While growing up Demetrius Markee was a huge fan of the work by David Lachapelle. Today he also includes Rick Day in his tasteful sources of inspiration. Two men who definitely left their trace in the aspirations of Demetrius. About his own work, Demetrius says: “I always find myself pushing the limit. I like to straddle the fence, without ever jumping completely over it, while also trying to maintain a certain dignified beauty in my images. I don't know if I could put a label on what I shoot, I know it's not porn, but it may lay somewhere in the realm of beauty and erotica.” For Demetrius the human body is a beautiful and fascinating thing and he feels it deserves to be displayed in such a way. “I love everything about photography and I am a firm believer beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It's not what just what the eye sees, but what the brain manifests from that image.”
The model in Demetrius’ shoot of today is named Travis Trace. Trace is not his real name, but he choose it consciously as Travis likes to leave a trace with everything he does. Travis is a full time dancer/dance instructor and part time model. He enjoys dancing hip hop, but his real passion lies in ballet. Travis, who has been dancing since he was a preteen and after college decided to become an instructor, teaches both. Modelling came as an accident to Travis. Being a dancer forces you to know your body and to become extremely confident in it and that ties into modelling. A very humble person, who playfully calls himself an average Joe on many occasions, Travis Trace doesn't take himself to serious and doesn't get hung up on being what may consider to be a very sexually attractive person.
Travic Trace and Demetrius Markee met each other in 2011 and over the years Demetrius has watched Travis grow in confidence in front of the camera as well as in physical size. Travis loves his work out sessions asides from his dancing. He plans to grace more cameras in due time, but always want to challenge himself to be better than before so the traces that he leaves behind are worthy. Who knows, one day Travis Trace and Demetrius Markee will be those sources of inspiration and aspiration for other models and photographers. –BM-
