PASCUAL IBAÑEZ MADE A CAREER OUT OF TRANSFORMING THE WORLD OF LIGHT INTO MAGNIFICENT PICTURES. BUT HE STARTED BY EXPLORING THE WORLD OF DARKNESS AND THE PICTURES THAT ARE TO BE FOUND THEIR. HE TOOK HIS FIRST PHOTOGRAPHS WHEN HE WAS ABOUT 15 YEARS OLD. THEY WEREN’T OF TODAY’S MODELS. THEY WERE OF MEN AND WOMEN WHO HAD LIVED THOUSANDS OF YEARS AGO. THEY WERE OF THE MYSTERIOUS DRAWINGS THAT CAN BE FOUND ON THE WALLS IN THE MANY CAVES THAT SURROUND THE CITY OF VALENCIA. HERE, IN THESE CAVES THAT SO LONG AGO GAVE SHELTER TO OUR ANCESTORS, PASQUAL LEARNED THE FINESSE OF PHOTOGRAPHY. HE LEARNED TO MAKE PHOTOS WITH THE LIGHT NATURAL LIGHT THAT FILTERS WITHIN THOSE MAGNIFICENT ROCK FORMATIONS. AND WHEN HE FELT HE WAS READY, IN THE EARLY 1990’S, PASQUAL EMERGED IN THE LIGHT A SKILLED AND TALENTED PHOTOGRAPHER.
His first work outside the caves was in fashion. And up until today, Pasqual Ibañez is loyal to that first commercial love of photography. But over the years his interest has also shifted to photographing actors and artist portraits. But whatever he does, it becomes abundantly clear he learned the art by working with those natural architectural rock formations. You see it in how he uses light. You see it in how he approaches his subjects, making sure every angle and curve of their bodies is highlighted as if it was a mineral shape, polished by thousands of years to become this perfect line that catches the light and creates a shadow. And sometimes he gives it away with the props he uses.
Like Pascual Ibañez, Borja Navarro comes from Valencia, Spain and like Pasqual he has lost his heart to photography. Except Borja likes to stand in front of the camera instead of behind. And he does it with flair. Borja is 23 years old and has been modelling since 3 years in which he has captured a playing ground that reaches from New York City to Seoul. In New York Borja was engaged to work on many print campaigns and with many designers. Working in this dynamic city gave him the international exposure he was hoping to gain and brought him eventually to Asia. Since 2013 he has been working for brands such as LG, Volkswagen and Samsung, and his face and body has graced international magazines like Men’s Health. And now Borja is back in Spain, where he signed up with an agency in Madrid.
Having grown up in the city of Valencia, where history is so present, and having spent so much time in the darkness of those ancient caves, it is almost inevitable that Pasqual Ibañez’s is influenced by it. You se it in his photographic style and sometimes you see it in the subject and props he use. Todays shoot is a modern interpretation of the old God Pan, the god of nature that appeared as half man and half animal and lived in the hills of Arcadia, Greece. For this occasion Pasqual covers Borja in rich furs, all synthetic of course. The result is most interesting. A combination of high end fashion and a modern interpretation of how our ancestors used to protect them from cold and rain. Influenced by his experience of working in both cave dwellings and the fashion industry, Pasqual Ibañez’s The Pan Within is a series of portraits that has more than one meaning. The work is gorgeous, and so is Borja Navarro. –BM-
