SOMETIMES YOU DON'T SEE WHAT IS RIGHT I FRONT OF YOU. WHEN TYLER REX WAS TOLD HE SHOULD GIVE MODELING A TRY, HE PROBABLY DIDN'T JUMP TO THE OCCASION. AFTER ALL, HE REALLY DIDN'T FIT THE MOLD. TYLER IS RATHER SMALL AND FRAIL BUILT. HE HAS A PALE SKIN ADORNED WITH COLOURFUL CONTRASTING TATTOOS. LITTLE DID HE KNOW THAT THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT CERTAIN PHOTOGRAPHER ARE LOOKING FOR.
An ex-girlfriend of Tyler Rex worked as a model and is because of the encouragements of her and her friends that Tyler eventually took the step and made a model mayhem account. He soon realized modeling was really fun. Something that kept him motivating for self-improvement. It was there on MMH that he first got in contact with Calvin Brockington. Tyler and Calvin met in 2013, a time Calvin was looking to shoot new talent. Knowing Calvin Brockington the way we do, we know he loves ink, so when he spotted Tyler, he was sold. "Tyler was tiny," Calvin remembers. "A handsome, little guy full with all these tattoos and a beautiful face." After a few conversations Calvin invited Tyler Rex for a test shoot.
One thing all photographers know is that the cameras will add weight to a model. And shooting at certain angles will also help. As predicted, Tyler Rex looked amazing. His pale skin with, the vibrant tattoos. His bright beautiful, blue eyes. And his tone but small frame. What Tyler, lacks in height, He gains in being perfectly proportioned. But soon after that first collaboration with Calvin Brockington Tyler disappeared. Sure, the two of them still stayed in touch by chatting, but no shoot came to happen. Tyler just sort of went away. He had taken a corporate job and was hitting the gym. He told Calvin eventually he wanted to come back modeling, but felt he needed to get his body to look the part. When he was ready, so was Calvin. And that is how the name BOSS came about.
"Like Tyler, we are all on a constant journey to make self-improvements," Calvin Brockington continues. "To find our, own way. I’m no different. Since I’ve started my career as a photographer. It’s been ups and downs, challenges and obstacles. But little by little, you figure things out and you truly find out what works for you." Calvin loves agency work, and he hopes to never ever stop working with amazing fashion models and incredible agencies. But he hopes to also be a champion for the freelance model. "The models that don’t quite fit industry measurements but are still just as beautiful, sexy, and ambitious and loved as any other agency signed model."
Being located in Dallas, has always been an issue for Calvin Brockington. Its conservative nature and slow moving ideas, have always frustrated him. But now, he looks at it differently. He goes by a very strong philosophy now: "When your ready, so am I." And what that means to him is, when you’re a model looking for a photographer, view Calvin's work; get to know what he does, his style, and his quality. And if you like what you see, then lets get to work. Calvin holds back very little anymore. He shoots what he wants to see. He asks models to be brave, to be open and if you let him do what he does, you will have magical pictures!
So far, Calvin Brockington's new philosophy has worked out. 2014 was the most editorial work, he'd ever put out. He was featured in multiple magazines, online blogs and even reached out to by designers who want him to shoot their collections. "I think, knowing what you want in life is key. Once you decide to live true to yourself, more of yourself can express it self. You are the boss of you. Fly or fall, you did things your way." –BM-
