IT WAS DURING ONE OF HIS EVENING STROLLS WHEN INSPIRATION STRUCK. THOUGH HAVING SEEN IT MANY TIMES BEFORE, THIS PARTICULAR TIME ROBBY CHRISTIAN LOOKED AT HIS SURROUNDINGS WITH A DIFFERENT EYE. AND HE REDISCOVERED THE BEAUTY AROUND HIM, A BEAUTY WE TOO OFTEN TAKE FOR GRANTED. IT WAS AT THIS MOMENT HE DECIDED TO HONOR THAT BEAUTY.
Robby Christian was born in Jakarta, Indonesia, 28 years ago but has lived on the Australian continent since he was 8. First in Melbourne, where he grew up and studied to het his bachelor of multimedia at Central Queensland University, majoring in photography. And for the past 3 years in Sydney where he started employment in luxury retail as store supervisor while simultaneously opening his own freelance photography business.
Growing up in Melbourne was for Robby growing up in an environment where fashion, art, photography and food intertwined. During his high school years he had set his goal to succeed in the hospitality industry. It wasn’t until in his mid 20’s that he realized he wanted to do something that gives his the drive and opportunity to be himself. To be allowed to express his creativity without any restrictions and to capture priceless moments. During his years at university, Robby was fortunate enough to be employed by Mister Sister Productions, a Melbourne based production house, which at that time was producing the online-based content of the series Life Of The Other Half. As their in-house photographer he was responsible for creating their advertising campaign material for their websites as well as head shots for all their current cast and crews and character interpretation shots for their digital campaign.
His first career choice, the hospitality sector, returned into Robby Christian’s life when he, following his work for Mister Sister Productions, started freelancing for various Melbourne based boutique hotels who were looking to update their online platforms. Until 2013 when Robby moved to Sydney. He settled down in Little Bay, a suburb in south-eastern Sydney next to Little Bay Beach which is considered to be one of Sydney’s undiscovered jewels. Semi-circular in shape and enclosed by headlands to the south and north, Little Bay Beach nurtures a harsh and mature nature. It is here, next to the cliffs, where Robby Christian takes his strolls in the evening and where he discovered the contrast between the naked human body and the harshness of the surrounding. It is here where he found inspiration for his breath taking black and white nude art series.
In this latest project Robby Christian had the pleasure of working along side his friend Theo Ford who has done hundreds of adult movie/photos for some of the biggest porn movie studios around the world. His other partners were Lucas, Andrew, Kedori and Damian. Stylistically Robby’s photography tends to be outdoor as it closely reflects his personality: wild and unpredictable. Robby embarked on his exciting black and white nude exploration with 3 main themes in his head: discovery, man versus nature and inner peace. “I love being a part of these artistic adventures with my models as we get to experience what nature has to offer during the actual shoot,” Robby comments. “For us it’s very therapeutic and almost peaceful. The tips and tricks we learn from each other and to just be able to connect to another human being without any technology in the way was definitely refreshing.”
Inspiration can strike at the most unexpected times in the most unexpected places. For Robby it was during one of his evening walks in an area he has called home for 3 years already. Though knowing he lives in one of the most beautiful areas surrounding Sydney, it took him time to actually realize how beautiful, how mature and how harsh his natural environment is, and how well this balances with the perfect anatomy of the male body. Therefor Robby Christian’s black and white nude art series is not only a set of male nude portraits. It is a homage to the beauty nature offers us, both in environment and human physique. Wild and unpredictable. –BM-
