If we could know the effect things we do today have on events in the future, would we do it differently? Or are we fatalists, believing everything is predestined. Believing we are just small individual wheels in the bigger clockwork that makes time ticks by and throws us in situations we could not have foreseen. At the end of 2015 I looked back with you on the events that happened during those 12 months. Events of a magnitude that it effected us all. Events that touched our lives. Changed our lives. And I spoke out the wish 2016 would be a better year. Today, looking back on 2016, I’m not sure if it has been.
Personally I was ready for 2016 to be over as soon as it started. Looking back today, I realize I wasn’t completely wrong. The year has been many things, varying from interesting to astonishing, joyful to shocking. And in a way we should be happy we were here to experience it all. For better or for worse. We kicked off with a record of celebrity deaths, not all heroic characters though. By the way, it looks like we are ending the year with a second list. There was the Pulse shooting, the Syrian refugee situation, Britains Brexit and the election of Donald Trump to be the new President of the United States. I bet we will include more of the latter next year around this time. There has been the attack in Nice, and, recently, in Berlin. The Johnny Depp divorce and Brangelina split. And Kim Kardashian’s stolen jewellery. In fact Kim and Kanye had a pretty rough year all together. Let’s put some good moments against that and see how the balance reads. We had the Olympics in Rio and Obama visiting Cuba and Laos. Beyonce gave us Lemonade and Madonna became Woman of the Year. We had Pokemon and Finding Dory, Kylie Jenner who launched her cosmetics line and David Cameron who resigned as Great Britains Prime Minister. Putting all that against each other, I think we can safely say 2016 hasn’t been the best year. So, if we had known the things that would happen beforehand, if we knew the effect things we do have on future events, would we have done it differently? I’d say yes, we would. At least in some cases.
But let’s not end this year by being negative. There or positive things. Thing to look forward to. Like 2017. It isn’t going to be an easy ride, we all know that. But let’s give it a chance, and let’s make the best of it. And let’s remember that everything in life is temporary. If things are going good, let’s just enjoy them knowing they won’t last forever. And if things go bad let’s try not to worry too much, because they too won’t last for ever. There are good times and there are bad times. But at least, there is still time.
Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year. –BM-
