From March 24 to March 31 2012, the Euopean Gay Ski Week event will once again move to Alpe d’Huez and turn this resort in the gayest village ever in Europe. Moving away from the blocks and bunkers from les Bergers, EGSW will settle in the heart of Alpe d’Huez and has found superb accommodations all centered around the cosy Avenue de Jeux. Snow White / Snow White

IN A WORLD DOMINATED BY TENSION, THREATS, CRUELTY AND ECONOMICAL MALAISE, IT IS NOT SO STRANGE WE ARE ONCE AGAIN LOOKING FOR MAGIC AND HAPPY ENDINGS. A MOMENT TO HIDE FROM REALITY AND INDULGE IN FAIRY TALE STORIES THAT CAN MAKE US DREAM AND ESCAPE. IN OTHER WORDS, IN A WORLD THAT HAS BECOME MORE AND MORE GRIM, WE NEED MORE GRIMM.

We have seen an revival of many super heroes over the past years, but it has become abundantly clear that men in tide spandex suits and black capes are no longer the answer to our needs. What we need now is magic. And apparently Hollywood intends to give it to us. As much as we can possibly deal with. Inspired by Grimm fairytales, NBC already launched the TV series Grimm and ABC has introduced us to a very modern take on the Snow White story. But there is more to come. Much more.

There are several ways we can bring fairy tales to life. There is the humoristic way, as we have seen with Shrek and Puss in Boots. And there is the more serious, darker direction, Red Riding Hood being a perfect example. No matter what you prefer, they all have a little magic inside and they all guarantee a perfect happily ever after moment. The one thing all these movies have in common though is that the story is never exactly what you expect it to be. Either it is a different take on the original, red Riding Hood once again being the perfect case, or a sequel to the classic tale, such as Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. If you like one of these genres, or better even, both, you are in for a treat. Not only with TV shows, but also on the big screen we will see another revival of fairytales. Upcoming are Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters with Gemma Arterton and Jeremy Renner, which brings us 15 years after the traumatic ginger house incident, and Bryan Singers Jack the Giant Killer, a modern day fairytale about men, giants and a kidnapped princess. 2013 introduces us to another take on the Wizard of Ozz with Disney’s Oz: The Great and Powerful, the same story but this time told from the Wizards point of view. But what we are all looking forward to is of course the most classic tale of all: Snow White. And we won’t be disappointed because 2012 will see not one, but two Snow White films.
 
Mirror Mirror is the first one to (re)introduce us in the magical world of evil queens, beautiful maidens, charming princes and poisoned fruit. If you expect a real time version of the classic Disney cartoon, think again. Mirror Mirror stands for a most original take on the old tale and can only be seen as an Alice in Wonderland meets Shrek kind of movie. The century old story of the beautiful princess whose existence is being threatened by her envious stepmother and evil queen has been given a lighthearted tone of voice in a movie directed by Tarsem Singh. Colourful, joyful and full of humor, Mirror Mirror stands guarantee for an evening or afternoon of enjoyment and good laughs. Not in the least by the excellent Julia Roberts in the role of the Evil Queen. Mirror Mirror, starring next to Julia Roberts Armie Hammer, Sean Bean, Nathan Lane and Lily Collins as Snow White, will open in theaters a of March 16, 2012.

Snow White and the Huntsman presents us a completely different take on the well-known fairytale. Written by Hossein Amini, Evan Daugherty and Evan Spiliotopoulos, Snow White and the Huntsman gives a small twist to the original with the Huntsman being ordered to take Snow White to the woods to be killed and winding up becoming her protector and mentor in a quest to vanquish the Evil Queen. Full of stunning special effects that makes the magic more real than ever, Snow White and the Huntsman is a movie in look closer to Red Riding Hood and might very well be as epic as Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings. Snow White and the Huntsman, directed by Rupert Sanders and starring Kristen Stewart as Snow White, Chris -Hemsworth ans the Huntsman, Sam Claflin as Prince Willima and Charlize Theron as the Evil Queen Ravenne will open in theaters on June 01, 2012.
 
If you ask us, there is no reason to see either one or the other Snow White film. They are so different in style and content, they both guarantee for a qualitative cinema visit. No matter what genre you prefer, there is enough magic in both of them. –BM-

The Raven

FOR A WRITER TO BE QUOTED, TO INSPIRE OTHERS TO GREAT DEEDS, IT MUST BE THE ULTIMATE HONOR. BUT WHAT IF YOUR STORIES INSPIRE TO DEEDS THAT ARE LESS GRAND, LESS HONORABLE? WHAT IF IT INSPIRES TO DEEDS THAT DO NOT BARE TO SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY? WHAT IF YOUR DEEPEST AND DARKEST FANTASIES ARE BEING BROUGHT TO LIFE?

 

When a mother and daughter are found brutally murdered in 19th century Baltimore, Detective Emmett Fields makes a startling discovery: the crime resembles a fictional murder described in gory detail in the local newspaper. A story that is part of a collection of stories penned by struggling writer Edgar Allan Poe. Poe’s status as social outcast catches the attention of the diligent detective and he is brought in for questioning. But even as the writer is questioned by the police, another grisly murder occurs, also inspired by the authors morbid writings.

Realizing a serial killer is on the loose and convinced that he will once again use Poe’s writings as springboard to murder, Detective Fields recruits the reclusive author to help piece together a pattern to the crimes and stop the madman before he can strike again. But when it appears someone close to Poe may become the murderer’s next victim, the stakes become even higher and the inventor of the detective story calls on his own powers of deduction to try to solve the case before it’s too late.

The Raven is a fictional account of the last days of Edgar Allan Poe, in which the famous poet pursues a serial killer whose murders mirror those in his won stories. According to director James McTeigue, the script is most exciting and the closest comparison is that it is a reinterpretation of Poe’s famous poem mixed with Se7ven. The Raven, starring John Cusack, Luke Evans, Alice Eve, Brendan Gleeson and Oliver Jackson-Cohen, will premier in movie theaters as of March 2012. –BM-

FILMS BASED ON REAL TIME EVENTS AND PEOPLE, WITH THE PROMISE TO REVEAL THINGS THAT YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW. ELIZABETH AND ITS SEQUENCE ELIZABETH 2, THE QUEEN, MILK, W, JFK… THERE ARE MANY GREAT FILMS AND EACH SINGLE ONE OF THEM LIVED UP TO ITS EXPECTATION. AND NOW THERE IS A NEW FILM THAT FOCUSES ON WHAT MANY REGARD UPON AS THE MAN WHO WAS ONCE THE MOST POWERFUL MAN IN THE UNITED STATES: J.EDGAR.

On January 1 1895 John Edgar Hoover was born. In his lifespan of 77 years he grew out to be the most powerful man in the United States. Inspired and driven by his mother who made him believe he was destined for great things, J. Edgar became head of the Bureau of Investigation at the age of 29. IN this position he was instrumental in the founding of the FBI in 1935 where he remained director until his death in 1972. Including his time before the creation of the FBI, Hoover was the undisputed leader of United States law enforcement for almost 50 years. A period in which he served under 8 different administrations (Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon), during the Gangster Wars of the 1930’s, the prohibition and Mafia wars, the World War II, the Cuba Crisis, the Korean War and the Vietnam war.

J. Edgar Hoover was the face of law enforcement in America and in that role he was feared and admired, reviled and revered. Untouchable by friend and feud and even Presidents could not control the man who, even though committed to law and justice, lead a life that was controversial to say the least. The man lived his life by the principals of secrets. He knew everything and more there was to know about the most powerful figures in national and international politics and the crime scene, but behind closed doors he held some big secrets himself that, had they come out, would have destroyed his image, career and life. Many speculated about Hoovers sexuality. Never married and closer than it was considered appropriate in his time to his associate director Clyde Tolson, also single for life, John Edgar Hoover was the stereotype model of a closet homosexual. Rumors Hoover always denied to the point of prosecuting those dared to speculate.

Clint Eastwood signs of as director on the film J. Edgar that will go in circulation this November. Together with Leonardo DiCaprio, who immortalizes Hoover on screen, he conducted many interviews, including inside FBI conversations and together they gathered much – some compromising – material. But Eastwood, movie veteran and professional as he is, will not be seduced into trashing and promises to deliver a true portrait of the man who lived such a powerful and controversial life. We can not tell you how much will be revealed but there will be certain suggestions towards more speculation. And if that is not enough, it is always good to see a great actor such as DiCaprio in action.

J. Edgar, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Naomi Watts, Damon Herriman and Jeffrey Donovan will open the AFI fest in Los Angeles on November 3, and see a Unites States release on November 9 before opening in theaters all over the world. –BM-

Another Earth

EVERY DECISION, WHETHER BIG OR SMALL, CONSCIOUS OR NOT, LEAD TO OTHER HAPPENINGS THAT EVENTUALLY BRING YOU TO A POINT IN YOUR LIFE, WHICH SEEMS TO BE INEVITABLE. LIFE IS A STRING OF EVENTS AND BECAUSE MOST OF THOSE OCCURENCES GO BY SEEMINGLY UNNOTICED, YOU CANNOT CONTROLE THE ROLLERCOASTER DESTINY THAT SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN LAID OUT FOR YOU. OR CAN YOU?

Bright and young Rhoda Williams has been accepted in the astrophysics program at MIT. Too celebrate she parties too hearty. While driving home she turns on the radio and that innocent action will forever change her life. A new planet, four times the size of the Moon, has appeared in the sky of Earth. It is indeed another Earth, except, due to some kind of unexplainable tear in the universe, this Earth comes from another universe and is very much the same as the one we live on. Occupied by this amazing news, Rhonda peers out of the car window to the sky and crashes into another car, killing a mother and child and sending the father into a coma.

When Rhonda is released from prison a few yeas later she learns that the man whose family she has destroyed, a composer named John Burroughs, has emerged from his coma. Devastated by what she has done, she is determined to visit him and apologize and make amends. Bu arriving on John’s doorstep, she finds a broken man, living as a depressed recluse and she can’t bring herself doing what she intended to do. And so she makes up a story about doing house cleaning. Rhonda and John start to know each other and there relationship start to bloom into something deeper and romantic, but Rhonda knows there is this big secret between them that can change everything. John still doesn’t know who she really is.

Entering a contest which is offering a civilian flight to the other nearby Earth, Rhonda is selected to be one of the first to travel to the looming planet. After John begs her not to go, she finally decides to come clean and tells him the truth. Heart broken John forces her out of his home. While preparing her travel, Rhonda than learns that life on the other Earth was identical to ours until the moment it appeared in our reality. Hoping that her identical self on the other Earth has not made the same mistakes she has made, she decides to return to John and offers him the ticket, hoping he can find his wife and child still alive on the nearby planet. John accepts and becomes one of the first travelers, leaving Rhonda behind and alone. Until months later, when Rhonda returns home one day and upon approaching her backdoor she finds someone standing in front of her… herself…

Directed by Mike Cahill Another Earth is a the everyday story of the string of events that colour our lives. If Rhonda had not been drinking too much, if she had listened to another radio station, or if John had not be on the road at the wrong place and the wrong time, everything would have been different. The fatal crash ended the list of ifs for John’s family. But what if there was a possibility to right all wrongs, to give life another change and another turn. Another Earth offers that possibility.

The Woman
