Stephen Gately, who was along with Ronan Keating one of the two lead singers in the boy band Boyzone, has suddenly passed away while enjoying a vacation in Majorca with his civil partner Andy Cowles. According to the official statement Stephen had gone out for drinks, returned to his accommodation and went to sleep normally, but never woke up.
Stephen Gately was a member of the boy band Boyzone who were considered a major pop band during the 1990’s. In the first 7 years of their existence, the band released 5 albums and signed off on 6 UK number 1 hit singles. After the break up Stephen worked on a solo singing career as well as a career on television and West End theater. The band recently got back together again. Stephen made worldwide headlines in 1999 when he admitted to be gay. He was the first member of a popular boy band to ever do so.

The surviving members of Boyzone, Keith Duffy, Mikey Graham, Ronan Keating and Shane Lynch, issued a joint statement: "We are completely devastated by the loss of our friend and brother, Stephen. We have shared such wonderful times together over the years and were all looking forward to sharing many more. Stephen was a beautiful person in both body and spirit. He lit up our lives and those of the many friends he had all over the world. Our love and sympathy go out to Andrew and Stephen's family. We love you and will miss you forever, Steo."
