SULTRY, SEDUCTIVE, HIP SWINGING… ALL WORDS THAT HAVE BEEN USED TO DESCRIBE THE SEXY STAR COLTON FORD. HOWEVER, THIS TIME THE REFERENCE IS NOT TOWARD THE MAN WE KNOW FROM THE MOVIES, BUT TO HIS MUCH-ANTICIPATED ALBUM ‘TUG OF WAR,’ PRODUCED BY ACCLAIMED PRODUCER/REMIXER/DJ QUENTIN HARRIS.
Colton Ford has been a recording artist for a long time before he pursued a career in male adult movies. But – despite his very short career as a porn actor – is was that what created ‘Colton Ford’ for the larger gay audience. Never before has a man been active in porn for such a short time, being able to gain fame of that proportion. But there is so much more to the man 'Colton Ford' than we all might think. And that was for Beautiful’s Hervé Godard reason enough to look him up in Los Angeles, and have a talk with this multi-talented sexy man. You can read the result of that conversation today and next week Wednesday on Beautiful, illustrated with the fantastic photography of Joe Oppedisano.
Singer, writer, actor... Is your sexy career definitely behind you?
Colton: You know, I’ve always been provocative, so that’s not going to change. I will continue to push the envelope, but in a way that is different from what I did in my adult film career. Would I do another porn? Don’t think so. I got everything out of that experience possible.
Aren't you sick of being recognized for what you did in the past and not for what you are doing now?
Colton: Not really. My porn experience has helped me to get to this place in my life. It’s a part of me, not the only part, but a part of me none-the-less. Interestingly, my experience in porn was very liberating, and it was something that required the performer in me to come out. Acting, singing, shooting a porn all require that you perform if you want to create something authentic and believable.
Do you think being a porn star was an obstacle for your present career?
Colton: I don’t think so really. There will be a contingency of people who won’t want to see my as anything but a porn personality, but there’s a larger population out there that is able to see that I’m multi-faceted. Plus, the music is real and stands on it’s own. I’ve always been a singer. I only did porn for 10 months. It helped me create 'Colton Ford,' which I’ve used to draw attention to my music. I think people think that I’ve started a new career with my singing, but actually I’ve had several record deals and have been pursuing music all of my adult life. Some may see my porn background as an obstacle. I choose to see it as part of a unique story that sets me apart from other singers out there. It has helped to open more doors then close them.
Tell me more about your album.
Colton: My album, 'Tug of War,' is very personal. I co-wrote all of the tracks with my producer, Quentin Harris, with the exception of the title, 'Your Love is Everything.' I wrote that with acclaimed songwriter’s Denise Rich and Laythan Armer. You can hear 4 music clips from the album on my My Space page: www.myspace.com/coltonfordmusic. The album talks about love, about sex, about the crazy world we live in and the struggles we all deal with in this life. The music includes House, R&B, Jazz, Dance and some Pop. It represents me.
You have an impressive body. What is your secret for looking so good?
Colton: Thanks… I’ve always taken very good care of my health. I’ve been working out for years. I think one of the most important things is to be consistent with your training. It’s a lot easier and better for your body to be consistent, then to stop and start and stop again. I’m not as big as I was when I was doing porn, but that’s by design. I don’t want to put the kind of stress on my body that I was subjecting it to a couple years ago, and I think not being as big serves my musical endeavors better.
I think you look even better now.
Colton: Thanks, that’s very kind. Still, I’m going to be 45, so I’m allowing myself to be bit more relaxed with my workout routine. (Laughs) I’m just being careful about what I eat and how I eat. Actually, I try to have something to eat every 3 hours, to keep my metabolism stimulated.
