TO BE THE CAPTAIN ON A SHIP, YOU PRETTY MUCH NEED TO KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT SAILING. YOU NEED TO KNOW HOW TO ROW, HOW TO SAIL, HOW TO DIVE AND HOW TO CATCH FISH. YOU NEED TO KNOW HOW TO NAVIGATE AND HOW TO STIR THE WHEEL. IN OTHER WORDS, YOU NEED TO BE THE ONE WHO CAN ALWAYS STEP IN AND GIVE DIRECTIONS TO OTHERS. WITHOUT YOU, THE SHIP WON’T SAIL.
To meet people that are so young and have so much talent, it is impressive and scary sometimes. They are the new captains on the new ships. Courageous and driven, they are ready to explore new territories. Embark on new journeys and ready for new adventures, they are the ones to set the course to a new future. Bing Zhang is such a captain.
24 years old Yibin ‘Bing’ Zhang was born and raised in China where he studied and got his bachelor degree in Digital Media Arts. Already during his college years he worked as a part-time photographer, connected to a studio in Beijng. In this period he learned the secrets of fashion and commercial photography. Eager to learn more, Bing went first to Germany and then to Korea to study film. During this time he did not forsake his photography either and focused merely on landscapes.
Since about a year Bing Zhang lives in sunny California where he once again embarked on an exciting study program. This time Graphic Design and uses his photographic skills as a hobby. His many activities and skills have given him the nickname Captain Awesome among his friends. A name that derives directly from the TV show Chuck, which is no problem for Bing since the character from the show is – according to Bing – “awesome and hot” and he aspires to be like him. He is on his way. Bing is a fervent member of the college rowing team, which makes him get out of bed at 4.30am to row for 2 hours every day of the week. And if that is not enough, he hits the gym 4 to 5 times a week and uses his spare energy to bike a good 100 miles during the weekend. And all that working out has resulted in a body to die for.
Rightfully proud of the results of his sports activities and his media talents, Bing Zhang took the bold decision to build his own website and portfolio. And in order to do so, he wanted to create a series of self portraits that portrays him as the Captain Awesome he so deservedly is. He set out to a friends house to visualize his Captain and Sailors series, set everything up for his scenes and simply asked his friend to do the shutter click. Arrangements and navigation as a true captain does. Bing poses not only as captain, but as the whole crew. Diver, fisherman, navigator. They are all part of his alter ego and of his own character and personality. Obviously Bing Zhang is preparing himself for exciting travels in his field of design and multi media. –BM-
